Tall, thin, androgynous Shirley Combs considers herself the world's greatest living detective because she uses the methods and casebook of Sherlock Holmes to solve crimes of the gentry of the American city most closely resembling London, England - in terms of the weather, at least. Sidekick/narrator Dr. Mary Watson both delights in and is frustrated by her partner's behavioral resemblance to Sherlock. Combs is unemotional, analytical, and given to pacing through the night in the streets of the almost perfectly livable city of Portland, Oregon. Her ability to observe details and understand their relationship to a case is unmatched; her demands on Watson's time are too.

The Hounding Shirley Combs/Dr Mary Watson Mysteries (Audible Audio Edition) Sandra de Helen Jess Reed McCorkle Ink Books

This was an interesting retelling of The Hound of the Baskervilles with reimagined, uber characters. I think the facts and clues surrounding the case could have used a little work, and with a couple re-reads and re-writes it would have been a great little story (I say this because the original and all subsequently reimagined characters implied to be Sherlock Holmes (that I'm familiar with) are known for their deductive reasoning skills; some of the jumps made in this book would have been much better and not look so much like guesswork and out of the blue had there been a couple things included along the way). I thought the characters were a little flat (I had the feeling that when they were written, many assumptions were made that the audience would just get who they are and less detail was employed than necessary to really make the characters come alive) but they were fun and I did enjoy their lively banter. Solid 3-star story (which really isn't bad!)!

The Hounding Shirley Combs/Dr Mary Watson Mysteries (Audible Audio Edition) Sandra de Helen Jess Reed McCorkle Ink Books Reviews

This wasn't quite what I was expecting. The title and description made me think that wolves or werewolves were going to involved with a bit of action but it didn't have any of that. A couple of times I almost gave up on because I almost got bored with. For me the ending almost felt anti-climactic. I don't think mysteries are for me. If your into mysteries, its a decent read.
The name,"Shirley Combs", cracked me up! As a long time Sherlock Holmes fan, I HAD to read this!

I loved the female versions of my old favorites. I really enjoyed the way the author had the characters laughing at themselves over their names.

I think this was a pretty good introduction to a series. I expect some growth and improvement as we go along. I'll be looking for the next one.
False advertising. That's why I've rated it so low. Per my search this was supposed to be a series about 2 lesbian partners solving mysteries. It's not. The mystery is okay but again not what was suggested. Oh gee the next book is supposed to suggest another pairing but not between Shirley and Mary. Too bad, this could have been a good series.
The Hounding grabbed me from the beginning; I thoroughly enjoyed the play on Sherlock Holmes and the clever descriptions found throughout the book. For instance, "Here the air was perfumed with lemon oil applied weekly, hundreds of times over." How cleverly does that denote age? I also appreciated the list introducing the characters and wish more novels included one. From the perspective of a logger's daughter, however, the author seems to have some erroneous assumptions about logging. Overall, the book is a good read.
Shirley Combs (works best when you say it out loud) and her reluctant assistant Dr. Mary Watson form a team of crime-solving Portlanders who rival their London idols in their skills of deduction. And what a crime they have to solve. A wealthy woman who wants to use her money to turn the Northwest logging industry on its ear is frightened to death by vicious dogs, something she has feared all her life. The story winds through Portland and its suburbs as Combs and Watson investigate a collection of suspects and finally, in the classic manner, confront the killer.

deHelen has done a wonderful job of paying homage to Conan Doyle's famous sleuth with "The Hounding" even to the extent of creating a family tree that connects the two stories. If you're a Sherlock fan, you'll be satisfied with how she does it. If you know nothing about Sherlock, other than his name, you'll enjoy the story for its clever twists and interesting characters.
A detective procedural au style du Sherlock Holmes, but with two funny and sometimes irritating female detectives of 2012. Shirley, a vegan with a "bony rump," is abrupt, single-minded and slightly rude. Mary, a naturopathic doctor who inexplicably eats disgusting hamburgers, is her Watson. Mary has more spit and fire than the original Watson, getting in her little digs about Shirley's commandist work style.

With references to old growth logging, breed-specific dog biases and lesbian CPAs, the book is thoroughly modern, yet on every page the detective mystery fan will laugh out loud at the callbacks to Conan Doyle. This book was a delight to read.
Shirley Combs and Dr. Mary Watson are drawn into a fascinating mystery in Sandra De Helen's The Hounding. Set in and around a very convincing Portland Oregon, filled with realistic characters, twisting through red herrings and mysterious clues, and pleasingly logical, this novel is first in the author's Shirley Combs/Dr. Watson series. And yes, the connection with England's famous Sherlock Holmes is deliberate--it also works very well.

There are plenty of suspects, all nicely organized, to keep the mystery alive. There's rain, forest, zoo and more to make the scenery real. There are all the modern-day issues Oregon delights in being famous for. And there's a nicely journalistic tone that evokes the more ancient Dr. Watson perfectly.

With just enough mystery to intrigue, just enough logic to entice, just enough homage to the past to feel right, and just enough of the present to make it new and exciting, this feels like the beginning of a thoroughly enjoyable series and I'm looking forward to reading more.

Dislcosure I read about this on the internet and jumped at the chance of an ecopy when they were offered free.
